In Fossil and Rewind, Sunyoung Hwang translates the physical intensity of her painting practice into print. Working intuitively, she builds and disrupts surfaces through layered gestures, allowing marks to accumulate, obscure and re-emerge.
Her brushstrokes suggest overlapping temporalities — moments sedimented one upon another. The titles gesture toward this cyclical movement: Fossil evokes compression and preservation, while Rewind implies reversal and return. Together, they reflect Hwang’s interest in how time is experienced not linearly, but as rhythm and recurrence.
Rather than illustrating a narrative, the works register psychological atmosphere. Spontaneous gestures carry traces of memory and emotion, creating compositions that feel both immediate and deeply embedded.
Through the Risograph print process, colour layers subtly shift and misalign, echoing the instability and revision central to Sunyoung Hwang’s canvases. Each edition is limited to 100.
