HOLLY STEVENSON

Artist Profile

Holly Stevenson is a British artist whose practice centres on ceramics, sculpture and installation. Through a distinctly playful yet pointed visual language, Stevenson interrogates gender stereotyping, animism and the social codes embedded within domestic and decorative forms.

Working predominantly with clay, Holly Stevenson animates her sculptural figures with exaggerated gestures and expressive surfaces. Humour and absurdity become tools for critique, allowing her to question how femininity is constructed, performed and policed. Her objects often feel alive — leaning into ideas of animism and agency — while simultaneously referencing the histories of craft and ornament traditionally coded as “feminine.”

Holly Stevenson graduated from the MA Fine Art programme at Chelsea College of Art and Design in 2011, where she was awarded the MFI Flat Time House Graduate Award. Since then, she has developed an ambitious exhibition profile across both gallery and public contexts. Her work has been presented with Pi Artworks, Richard Saltoun Gallery and Sid Motion Gallery, positioning her within contemporary conversations around feminist sculpture and expanded ceramics.

In 2023, Holly Stevenson was invited to present new work as part of Frieze Sculpture, curated by Fatoş Üstek — a significant milestone that situates her practice within an international public art platform. That same year, her large-scale public sculpture Another Mother was installed atop Temple Underground Station in central London, realised in partnership with Westminster City Council. The commission marked a major expansion of her work into the civic sphere.

Across scales, Stevenson’s practice remains committed to using material play to confront entrenched narratives around gender and power.
